Guardian: Florida health officials confirmed 10 new Zika infections on Friday, the largest number of infections found on a single day and a sign of the United States faltering response to a looming crisis. There are now nearly 1,000 people infected with the virus in Washington DC and the 50 states, 246 of them in Florida, and 2,026 infections in American territories, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Benign bacteria block mosquitoes from transmitting Zika, chikungunya viruses

2016-07-01 20:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have confirmed that a benign bacterium called Wolbachia pipientis can completely block transmission of Zika virus in Aedes aegypti, the mosquito species responsible for passing the virus to humans. Matthew Aliota, a scientist at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) and first author of the paper -- published today (July 1, 2016) in the journal Scientific Reports -- says the bacteria could present a "novel biological control mechanism,"...

Warming temps raise Zika virus risk

2016-06-22 09:11:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

EarthSky: Global warming will cause more people to be exposed to the mosquito that carries Zika virus, says a new study. Why this mosquito is such a good virus-spreader. As Americans ready themselves for the arrival of mosquitoes this summer, many may be wondering whether they are at risk for tropical diseases like Zika and whether climate change will raise the risks of infection. My colleagues and I recently completed a study examining how projected changes in climate and human population may increase...

Zika virus spreading rapidly across Puerto Rico

2016-06-19 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

PBS: There are alarming signs the Zika virus is spreading rapidly in Puerto Rico, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday. Blood banks on the island have seen a steady rise in the portion of donations that have to be rejected because they contain Zika virus. Last week, 1.1 percent of the donated units were contaminated. If that many people are infected with Zika when they go to give blood, its a sign of how much virus spread there is going on in Puerto Rico, CDC Director...

Zika testing lags in a vulnerable New York population

2016-06-18 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New York Times: As the Zika virus swept north from Brazil into the Caribbean, bringing with it frightening risks for pregnant women and their unborn children, United States health officials decided in February that all expectant women who had visited the countries affected should be tested for the disease. But after the guidelines were put in place, public health officials and doctors in New York City found that large numbers of women, many uninsured or low-income immigrants from the Caribbean and Latin America,...
