EU's New Copyright Directive Could Break the Internet

A copyright directive that some fear could break the Internet has cleared the final hurdle in the European Union. The directive makes platforms for user-uploaded content -- like Google and Facebook -- legally liable for violations of the rights of copyright holders. It requires them to obtain the permission of the holders before posting content to their sites.

Russia pushes ahead with plan for sovereign internet from November

(Telecompaper) The lower house of the Russian Parliament has approved a draft law on ensuring independence of the domestic internet. The chamber approved the bill on second reading, with few changes after its Information Policy committee cleared the legislation a day earlier, reports Comnews.ru. If the proposal is adopted, it would enter into force in November of this year.

Umniah partners Jordan Electric Power Company to deploy fibre optic infrastructure for wholesale internet

(Telecompaper) Jordanian operator Umniah, a subsidiary of Batelco Group, has agreed to set up a new company with the Jordan Electric Power Company (Jepco) to create the infrastructure for a large-scale fibre optic network servicing the areas operated by Jepco. This will deliver wholesale high bandwidth internet services to telecom companies and service providers, eventually reaching more than 1.4 million homes and businesses.

Facebook CEO calls for more coordinated internet regulation to fight harmful content

With Facebook struggling to keep up with calls to reform its policies, Zuckerberg called for a "a more active role for governments and regulators" to coordinate rules for the internet.
