Antarctic rescue mission: Australian icebreaker forced back by blizzard

Reuters: An Antarctic blizzard has halted an Australian icebreaker's bid to reach a Russian ship trapped for a week with 74 people on board, rescuers said on Monday. The Aurora Australis had to return to open waters about 18 nautical miles from the stranded Akademik Shokalskiy because of poor visibility, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is co-ordinating the rescue, said. The Australian vessel reached as close as about 10 nautical miles from the trapped ship before turning back....

Helicopter rescue planned for ship stranded in Antarctic

CNN: As the 74 people on a climate change research ship stuck in the ice in Antarctica readied for New Year's Eve festivities, authorities revealed plans to send in a rescue helicopter. The Russian-flagged MV Akademik Shokalskiy has not moved in a week since getting stuck in unusually thick ice on Christmas. The people on board say they are holding up fairly well. "The group on this ship is incredibly collegiate," said Alok Jha, a science correspondent for The Guardian newspaper, told Anderson Cooper...

Antarctic passengers ponder logistics of air rescue as second icebreaker closes in

Guardian: Sunday began as the days now always begin on the MV Akademik Shokalskiy, with a briefing for the passengers on the status of the rescue effort. The crew and expedition leaders had been poring over weather and ice forecasts and speaking with maritime rescue agencies and other ships' captains since the early morning. At 10am they decided it was time to warn the rest of the passengers to steel themselves for the extreme-case scenario if the icebreakers could not get us out within the next 48 hours:...
Cracking ice bodes well Antarctica ship rescue

Reuters: Ice that has trapped a Russian ship with 74 people on board in Antarctica appeared to be cracking up on Sunday, raising hopes for a rescue as a powerful Australian icebreaker approached the stranded vessel. The ice-bound ship, the Akademik Shokalskiy, left New Zealand on November 28 on a privately funded expedition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of an Antarctic journey led by famed Australian explorer Douglas Mawson. It has been stuck in the ice since December 24. Its passengers include...

Antarctic mission on ice as rescue ship is forced back
2013-12-27 22:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Cape de la Motte, East Antarctica: the Xue Long appeared as a dot on the horizon, against a bright blue sky, to the starboard side of our ice-locked ship just after dinnertime on Friday evening, local time. After two days of intense blizzards, with biting cold that had forced us to spend all our time below decks, the break in the weather and the approaching rescue had put the crew and passengers of the MV Akademik Shokalskiy in good spirits. With temperatures at a pleasantly bearable -1C, some...
