The Food and Drug Administration approved the injectable drug from Amgen Inc. for patients with hard-to-treat melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer that is expected to be diagnosed in 74,000 U.S. patients this year. For now, the drug is only approved for melanoma tumors that cannot be removed surgically.

UPDATE 2-BioDelivery's opioid treatment wins FDA approval

BioDelivery Sciences International Inc said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved its opioid treatment for chronic pain, sending the drugmaker's shares up 23 percent in premarket trading on Monday. Belbuca is an opioid film patch and aims to treat patients with chronic pain who need round-the-clock treatment and for whom current alternatives do not suffice.

The FDA's Arthritis Advisory Committee votes 10-4 recommending approval of AstraZeneca's lesinurad 200 mg tablets, in combination with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor , for the treatment of hyperuricemia associated with gout. The FDA's date is December 29. Lesinurad inhibits a protein called urate transporter which is responsible for most of the renal reabsorption of uric acid.
