Dolby Atmos: True 3D surround sound (around, above, and below) finally comes of age
2014-03-18 18:15:49| Extremetech
The word 'Dolby' is intrinsically linked with the concept of high-fidelity sound. If you're old enough, you will remember when Dolby was synonymous with an awesome button on your car or home stereo that reduced the noisy hiss present on all audio cassettes. Today, while Dolby still does a lot of work in the area of noise reduction, consumer attention long ago shifted to Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround. VLC for Windows 8 finally arrives, bringing MKV and subtitle support to tablets
2014-03-13 18:25:17| Extremetech
At long last, the Windows 8 Metro environment has a decent media player that can play MKV files: VLC for Windows 8! VLC Media Player Beta for Windows 8 is a complete reimagining of VLC for Microsoft's touch-oriented Metro interface, but still with most of the functionality that makes the Desktop version of VLC so awesome. VLC for Windows 8 includes support for the MKV container format, the H.264 codec (along with its various containers/file formats), and almost every other codec under the sun (just like VLC on the Desktop).
