The $1 origami microscope could revolutionize disease diagnosis, revitalize kids interest in science and biology
2014-04-16 14:37:07| Extremetech
An engineer at Stanford University has created a DIY microscope, called the Foldscope, that is fashioned out of a single piece of printed-and-folded A4 paper, origami-style. This paper-based microscope is incredibly cheap to produce (less than a dollar), and yet still offers a very high magnification level (2,100x) that can be used to diagnose various strains of malaria and other diseases. Given that diagnosis currently requires a cumbersome optical microscope that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars, the Foldscope will revolutionize medicine -- primarily in poorer countries, but also here in the west.

Origami: The surprisingly simple secret to creating flexible, high-power lithium-ion batteries
2014-02-05 19:11:10| Extremetech
Researchers at Arizona State University have fused the mystical art of origami with modern materials science to create a high-performance, flexible lithium-ion battery. These batteries can be twisted, bent, and scrunched up multiple times, while retaining the same energy capacity and power output. Perhaps most excitingly, though, the researchers tell me that "all standard electrode materials and packaging technologies are used," meaning this tech could theoretically be commercialized in its current form.
