RTI sales, profit up in 1Q ahead of Alcoa merger

On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh-based company reported net income of $4.5 million, or 15 cents per share, for the three-month period ending March 31. This compares with a loss of $4.2 million, or 13 cents per share, in the first quarter of 2014. Sales for the quarter were $198.5 million, which compares with sales of $174.5 million in the same period a year ago, driven by increases in commercial aerospace and medical device market volumes.

Alcoa swings to profit, but revenue misses

Alcoa Inc. swung to first-quarter profit on revenue growth that mostly stemmed from strong volume in its divisions that make parts for the automotive and aerospace markets and a boost from stronger aluminum prices. Alcoa's earnings report unofficially marks the start of the first-quarter earnings reporting season, one that is expected to be weak as many U.S. companies get hit by effects from lower oil prices, imports and a stronger U.S. dollar.

Alcoa set to buy RTI Int'l Metals in US$1.5 bil. deal

Alcoa is taking another step to bolster its stake in the aerospace industry with a US$1.5 billion deal to buy titanium supplier RTI International Metals. The New York-based company said Monday that it will buy the specialty metal products company in an all-stock deal.
