Plastc is an e-ink, NFC meta card that will (try to) replace your entire wallet

2014-10-08 15:28:47| Extremetech

There's a new company in town that wants to replace your credit, debit, and store cards with a single digital "meta" card: The unpronounceable and probably-conceived-during-a-drunken-game-of-scrabble Plastc. The Plastc Card is the same size and thickness (0.8mm) as a credit card, but it manages to pack in a battery, e-ink display, NFC, and other high-tech features, along with the usual magnetic strip.

Sonys 13-inch Digital Paper is the first device to use a flexible e-ink display

2014-03-28 14:45:08| Extremetech

After almost a year of agonizing posturing by Sony, the semi-flexible 13.3-inch Digital Paper has finally been unveiled. For $1100, you can get your hands on the thinnest, lightest A4-sized e-ink tablet. The Digital Paper supports stylus input, has built-in WiFi, and lasts up to three weeks on a single charge. The key technology here is the new Mobius display from E Ink, which is very light and highly flexible -- though it isn't clear how much of that flexibility made it into the final Digital Paper product.

YotaPhone 2 hands-on: No, dual OLED and e-ink displays on a smartphone is not as awesome as it sounds

2014-02-26 19:31:46| Extremetech

Earlier today, I wandered over to one of the busier booths at Mobile World Congress 2014: YotaPhone. The Moscow-based company has made some waves over the last couple of days with the unveil of the second-generation YotaPhone -- a double-sided, dual-screen high-end (Snapdragon 800) smartphone that has a delicious 5-inch 1080p AMOLED screen on the front, and a large e-ink display on the back. Both displays are touchscreens, and the phone runs Android 4.4. The idea is that you use the phone normally -- but you have the option of sending whatever's on the front of the phone to the e-ink display on the back.
