Wall St Gains as Weak Dollar Boosts Commodities

Wall Street gains were driven by materials stocks on Monday as a weaker dollar boosted commodities, and investors turned their focus to the earnings season. Profits at S&P 500 companies are expected to have fallen 7.7 percent on average in the first quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, under pressure from a weak global economy.

Gap stock plunges on weak sales

Gap shares plunged on Friday in the wake of another weak sales report. The stock price for Gap Inc. plunged 14 percent in afternoon trading, the day after the clothing retailer said that its sales had declined year-to-year for the five weeks that ended April 2. Net sales dropped more than 15 percent from $1.53 billion during the five week period in 2015, to $1.43 billion during that time in 2016.

Toward the end of trading Thursday, the Dow traded down 1.14 percent to 17,514.19 while the NASDAQ declined 1.59 percent to 4,842.52. The S&P also fell, dropping 1.43 percent to 2,037.10.
