Khaleej Times: Clean energy, pollution, forestry, agriculture, urbanisation, disaster risk reduction, climate finance are all topics under discussion at the Abu Dhabi Ascent. The time for talking is over, the time for action has reached its deadline. This was the message repeated all morning by national and international high level speakers at the opening of the Abu Dhabi Ascent, a two-day conference that started today in Abu Dhabi, in support of the New York September 2014 climate summit. Shaikh Abdullah...
East Antarctica more at risk than thought to long-term thaw

Australian Broadcasting Corporation: PART OF EAST ANTARCTICA is more vulnerable than expected to a thaw that could trigger an unstoppable slide of ice into the ocean and raise world sea levels for thousands of years, a study showed on Sunday. The Wilkes Basin in East Antarctica, stretching more than 1,000 km inland, has enough ice to raise sea levels by three to four metres if it were to melt, the report said. The Wilkes is vulnerable to warming associated with climate change because it is held in place by a small rim of ice,...
East Antarctic Melting Could Raise Sea Levels By 10 To 13 Feet, Study Finds

ThinkProgress: A region of East Antarctica is more vulnerable than previously thought to a massive thaw that could result in world sea levels rising for thousands of years, a study found Sunday. The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, looked at the 600-mile Wilkes Basin in East Antarctica, which, if it melted, has enough ice to raise sea levels by 10 to 13 feet. Researchers found that the region was vulnerable to melting because it`s held in place by a small "ice plug" that may melt over the...
East Antarctic Ice Basin May Be At Risk

Truthdig: Part of the East Antarctic ice sheet may be less stable than anyone had realised, researchers based in Germany have found. Writing in Nature Climate Change, two scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) say the melting of quite a small volume of ice on the East Antarctic shore could ultimately trigger a discharge of ice into the ocean which would result in unstoppable sea-level rise for thousands of years ahead. www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nclimate2226.html...
