The U.S. Supreme Court sided with the EEOC today and clarified the standard for religious accommodation and disparate-treatment claims under Title VII. The Court ruled that an applicant can advance a disparate-treatment claim by showing that an employer's belief that she needed a religious accommodation was a motivating factor in the employer's decision against hiring her.

A California district court recently granted summary judgment in favor of four defendants on the grounds that plaintiffs had no evidence that a decedent was exposed to asbestos from defendants' products. The district court found that the plaintiffs' aircraft expert could not provide admissible evidence as to how the decedent may have been exposed to asbestos while working as an aircraft electrician for the U.S. Air Force.
