Court Overturns E.P.A.s Biofuels Mandate

2013-01-26 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New York Times: A federal appeals court threw out a federal rule on renewable fuels on Friday, saying that a quota set by the Environmental Protection Agency for incorporating liquids made from woody crops and wastes into car and truck fuels was based on wishful thinking rather than realistic estimates of what could be achieved. The ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia involved a case brought by the American Petroleum Institute, whose members were bound by the 2012 cellulosic...

Court rules EPA ethanol mandate "unreasonable"

USA Today: A federal court delivered a defeat to the biofuels industry Friday, ruling the U.S. government exceeded its authority by requiring refiners to purchase cellulosic biofuel despite the fact the next-generation fuel is not commercially available. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia decided in favor of the American Petroleum Institute when it ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency's process for estimating cellulosic biofuel output "did not take neutral aim at accuracy" and...

U.S. court blocks 2012 cellulosic biofuel target

2013-01-25 23:13:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: A U.S. federal court on Friday struck down a 2012 target for refiner use of cellulosic biofuels, but upheld the government's goal for use of other advanced fuels. The divided ruling by the D.C. Circuit Court allowed oil refiners to claim a partial victory after fighting against U.S. renewable fuel targets. But it also gave hope to biofuel producers, who have been defending the mandates. The American Petroleum Institute filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency's 2012 target,...

Court says EPA overestimates biofuels production

2013-01-25 20:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Associated Press: A federal appeals court has ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency is overestimating the amount of fuel that can be produced from grasses, wood and other nonfood plants in an effort to promote a fledgling biofuels industry. At issue is a 2007 renewable fuels law that requires a certain amount of those types of fuels, called cellulosic biofuels, to be mixed in with gasoline each year. Despite annual EPA projections that the industry would produce small amounts of the biofuels, none of that...
