Description of the job A vacancy for a Materials Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence Space to work on space flight hardware in Stevenage. The successful applicant will join Materials Process Organics and Composites technical domain. You will be exposed but not limited to the following material classes Adhesives Carbon fibre and glass fibre reinforced plastic Thermoset and thermoplastic polymers We use composite manufacturing techniques such as filament winding and hand layup, with access to a state of the art materials laboratory to test the manufactured spacecraft hardware. You will provide technical solutions to materials related issues which arise during the design, manufacture and test of flight hardware and the team mission of assuring correct materials qualification for mission specific requirements. An understanding of how organics and composites interact with other material classes is important due to the complex nature of spacecraft equipment. The behavior of materials during a spacecraft mission, when exposed to environments such as radiation, large temperature ranges and vacuum is preferred. Working within a team of specialists or individually, you will interface with people at all levels Shop Floor, Project Teams, through to Management and Customers. A keen passion for future technologies is important as within the organics and composites technical domain, you will be expected to provide the lead on new materials and process developments. The organics and composites technical domain is a transnational team working in space and military aircraft programmes. Tasks accountabilities Lead materials and process investigations and inspections of hardware Critique qualification, test plans and data analysis of data and approve test reports MP lead on research and development activities and attend industry conferences Providing Materials and Processes MP support to Project Equipment Procurement Support, coach and guide junior Materials Engineers, Graduates and Apprentices Authorise changes to Parts Materials and Processes PMP documents Chair Materials and Process Review Boards MPCB, Material review Boards MRBs, and manage technical performance of subcontractors and suppliers and inhouse Chair reviews at all stages of product design, development and manufacture This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Companys success, reputation and sustainable growth.
