Elevated carbon dioxide in atmosphere trims wheat, sorghum moisture needs
2013-03-25 19:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: Plenty has been written about concerns over elevated levels of carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere, but a Kansas State University researcher has found an upside to the higher CO2 levels. And it's been particularly relevant in light of drought that overspread the area in recent months. "Our experiments have shown that the elevated carbon dioxide that we now have is mitigating the effect that drought has on winter wheat and sorghum and allowing more efficient use of water," said K-State agronomy...

Post-Drought Nitrogen Carryover Could Benefit Wheat Growers
2013-03-14 21:39:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Purdue University Soil nitrogen left behind by Indiana's drought-stricken 2012 corn crop could mean that the state's wheat growers might be able to apply less fertilizer this spring, a group of Purdue Extension agronomists say. Corn plants stressed by extreme heat and too little water yielded less grain and left more nitrogen in soils than in normal years. Wheat has more potential to scavenge the nutrient than a subsequent corn crop. read more

Cover Crops in Corn, Soybeans, Wheat
2013-02-15 20:10:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Source: Conservation Technology Information Center Cover crops are becoming an increasingly important and prominent part of conservation and production in agriculture. The benefits offered are numerous, from increased soil health to less erosion. We've covered many angles of cover crops, and here we bring you photos from USDA SARE and the Conservation Technology Information Center of different cover crops planted, including peas, hairy vetch, tillage radish and ryegrass. If you planted cover crops in 2012, be sure to take the CTIC survey, and let them know about your 2012 cover crop production. read more
