The high-tech industry contends that Congress' failure to raise the cap on H-1B visas is costing the U.S. an opportunity to create a new job every 43 seconds. To make its point, Compete America, which represents many major high-tech firms on immigration issues, has built a calculator that ticks away jobs that it says are lost, or not created, because of visa restrictions.

A final, desperate -- and doomed -- push for H-1B restrictions
2013-06-20 15:05:18| InfoWorld: Top News
The Senate is expected to vote next week on an immigration bill, and it is likely to pass after one last fight to give U.S. workers hiring preference over foreigners with H-1B visas. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) are backing a proposed amendment to the immigration bill that would require employers to "first offer a vacant position to an equally or better qualified American worker" before filling the job with an H-1B worker.

With the H-1B fight over and lost, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) lashed out, almost flailing in the minutes before the Senate Judiciary Committee's final vote Tuesday. The tech industry had won. It was getting late in the day and the committee was moments away from adopting, in a 16-2 vote, 19-pages of tech industry sponsored amendments to the H-1B provisions in the long-awaited Senate immigration.
