The nation's highest federal court in recent days threw out a request by chocolate giant Nestle SA, the world's largest food maker, and a pair of other companies to reject a lawsuit that seeks to hold all three companies liable for using child slaves to harvest cacao in the African nation of Ivory Coast. In rejecting the bid, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a December 2014 ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco that also refused to dismiss the suit against Nestle, Archer Daniels Midland Co.

The U.S. Department of Labor has sued United States Steel Corp. to reverse disciplinary actions taken against two employees for reporting workplace injuries in violation of the company's immediate-reporting policy and to force the company to amend the policy. The two employees were suspended without pay for failing to immediately report workplace injuries, per the company's policy, according to the lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware, on Feb. 17. In February 2014, Jeff Walters, a full-time utility technician at the Pittsburgh steel manufacturer's Clairton, Pennsylvania, plant found a small splinter lodged in his thumb and extracted it himself, according to the lawsuit.

Two families who accuse one of the largest natural gas drillers in Pennsylvania of polluting their well water are getting their day in court. Opening statements are set to begin Tuesday in a bitter and long-running federal lawsuit that pits homeowners in the village of Dimock against Houston-based Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. Dozens of other plaintiffs settled with Cabot in 2012.
