SoftBank to invest USD 1 bln in e-commerce company Coupang

(Telecompaper) A subsidiary of Japanese operator Softbank will invest USD 1 billion in Korean e-commerce retailer Coupang. The investment is expected to close at the beginning of July, and will bring the total amount of funding raised by Coupang over the past year to nearly USD 1.5 billion. Coupang will use the fresh funds to boost its innovations in its fulfillment service, same-day delivery network and mobile applications. Coupang will also expand its R&D offices in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Shanghai and Seoul. Coupang reports it has reached 25 million mobile application downloads in Korea. Mobile sales currently account for over 75 percent of the company's revenue and over 85 percent of its total traffic.

Japan stocks give ground, with Softbank, Bridgestone among decliners

The broader Topix was flat, while the dollar was buying A 119.98, up modestly from A 119.92 at the previous day's Japan stock close. Earnings and earnings expectations remained in the forefront, with Bridgestone Corp. sliding 5.2% lower after posting fractional drops in net income and operating profit for the January-March quarter, while tipping a 3% fall in profit for the first-half of the year.

Arora gets plum post at SoftBank

Tokyo/New Delhi, May 11 : Indian-origin Nikesh Arora has been appointed as president and chief operating officer of Japan's SoftBank and may become the next CEO as the telecom major expands its presence in the overseas market, including India. At the company's earnings conference, CEO Masayoshi Son said the former Google executive was a "strong candidate" to lead the company in future.
