IBM has licensed smartphone and tablet processor designs from ARM, which will be used in new communications and networking gear. With the new licenses, IBM has the "capability to add mobile processing to complement our high-performance networking and mobile 'front-end' businesses -- tablets and handsets," said Michael Corrado, an IBM spokesman, in an e-mail.

Tilera chips add muscle to x86 servers and free up computing capacity

New Tilera co-processors tuned for Hadoop, video and networking applications can free up the primary CPUs of x86 servers to run other applications. The company's Tile-IQ series of chips will have up to 72 low-power CPU cores, which will bring extra computing muscle to speed up servers, said Bob Doud, director of processor strategy for Tilera. The Tile-IQ series includes the Tilencore-GX chips, which will come with nine, 16, 36 and 72 cores.

Intel has delayed production of its "Broadwell" processors due to a manufacturing glitch, something analysts say could postpone the launch of PCs and tablets based on the new chip. Intel ran into some problems with the 14-nanometer process used to manufacture the chips and will have to fix them before it can resume production, CEO Brian Krzanich said during Intel's earnings call on Tuesday.
