2016-07-04 00:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Vice: Anyone driving an older car or an old motorcycle will no longer be welcome in the streets of the French capital on weekdays. The ban, which aims to reduce air pollution in the City of Light, came into effect Friday and makes Paris the first city in the country to officially establish a "limited traffic area." From now on, personal-use vehicles built before January 1, 1997 and utility vehicles built before October 1, 1997 will have to be off the roads from 8:00am to 8:00pm, Monday to Friday....

Climate Central: The UK government won high praise six months ago for taking a leading role in the successful Paris climate change agreement, the first legally binding commitment on curbing carbon emissions by all 195 United Nations countries. With the vote to leave the EU, the UK's future participation in that landmark accord is now in doubt. A plenary session at COP21 for the adoption of the Paris Agreement. The signatories to the historic agreement at the UN conference on climate change in Paris pledged to limit global warming to below 2°C and to aim for no more than 1.5°C rise above pre-industrial levels. The planet has already warmed by 1°C in the last century. But, climate scientists say, the...

Guardian: Paris has banned old cars from its streets in a war on air pollution that environmentalists hope will also drive dirty vehicles from the centres of other European cities. Air pollution, in large part caused by fine particulate fuel emissions, kills 48,000 people each year in France, about 400,000 in Europe and around 3.7 million worldwide, data published by Frances public health agency this month showed. From Friday, any car registered before 1 January 1997 will be banned from the citys streets...
To Fight Pollution, Paris Imposes Weekday Ban On Old Cars
2016-07-01 22:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
National Public Radio: Paris was at the forefront of public bike-sharing schemes, and it now has electric car-sharing schemes and is something of a laboratory for mobility. As of today, motorists with cars built before 1997, and motorcycles built before 2000, will no longer be able to drive them in the city during daylight hours on weekdays. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo says keeping old cars out of the city will help lower pollution levels. But not everyone is happy about it. Marc Vernhet makes his living driving tourists...
