Compelling case for global deal on climate, says UN

Financial Times: The need for international regulation to tackle the threat of climate change is much more compelling now than at the failed talks in Copenhagen in 2009 because of the mounting evidence of the effects of global warming, the UNs top climate official has said Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said she expected a draft agreement of less than 50 pages, including a goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by the second half of the century,...
Global Effort to Combat Climate Change May Not End in Paris Next Year

ClimateWire: It's been more than four years since leaders tried and failed to craft a binding new global climate change treaty in Copenhagen, and as nations head toward a new deal in 2015, the aftershocks of that Danish summit continue to reverberate. From climate campaigners to high-level diplomats, those who are committed to fighting global warming say making a strong agreement in Paris next year that radically reduces levels of greenhouse gas emissions is critical. But, they argue, it's not the last step...

Al Jazeera: Like many who took part in this year's UN climate talks, I leave Warsaw tired. Not as tired as those that spent two weeks talking, drafting, wrangling, redrafting and horse-trading, followed by an almost 40-hour marathon final session. But I do feel tired. I'm tired by the fact that all of that effort, energy and, in the main, goodwill has again resulted in so little progress. Where does it go wrong? Nobody can now dispute that climate change is a threat to human society, to the planet as a whole....

Deals at Climate Meeting Advance Global Effort
2013-11-24 00:06:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New York Times: Two weeks of United Nations climate talks ended Saturday with a pair of last-minute deals keeping alive the hope that a global effort can ward off a ruinous rise in temperatures. Delegates agreed to the broad outlines of a proposed system for pledging emissions cuts and gave their support for a new treaty mechanism to tackle the human cost of rising seas, floods, stronger storms and other expected effects of global warming. The measures added momentum to the talks as United Nations members look...
