Dominion, James River Association announce agreement on coal ash ponds

Dominion Virginia Power and the James River Association have reached an agreement on discharges of treated coal ash wastewater from the ponds at the Bremo Power Station in Fluvanna County. The discharges are being regulated by the a permit the state Department of Environmental Quality and the State Water Control Board issued in January, which requires Dominion to build and operate a wastewater treatment system at the power station.

A procession of more than 100 disappointed citizens filed out of a Virginia State Water Control Board meeting late Thursday afternoon after the agency approved permits for Dominion Virginia Power to begin draining water from coal ash ponds on sites in Fluvanna and Prince William counties into the James and Potomac rivers. Over the past few months, the permit applications have stirred opposition against Dominion Virginia Power by local and regional environmental groups such as the James River Association and the Southern Environmental Law Center.
Kentucky Utilities, LG&E closing several coal ash ponds

Prompted by new federal regulations, the state's two largest utility companies are closing several storage ponds that collect the coal ash burned by power plants. Kentucky Utilities says it will spend $678 million to meet federal environmental requirements involving coal ash ponds.
