One Word May Save Indonesias Forests
2013-10-07 12:35:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: Indonesias forest and peatland fires have flared up again this season, sending smoke and haze from the island of Sumatra north across the Malacca Strait to Malaysia. The fires are now an annual consequence of the mismanagement of Indonesias forests. With the removal of a single word from the countrys constitution, however, that may change for the better. On May 16, Indonesias Constitutional Court deleted the word state from this clause: Customary forests are state forests located in the areas...

Drought is killing the worlds forests
2013-10-07 12:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
University World News: Every forested continent on Earth has suffered widespread droughts over the past 30 years that have killed tens of thousands of trees. Their scale, duration and almost coordinated nature across different continents is causing extreme alarm in ecological circles. Derek Eamus, a lecturer at the University of Technology in Sydney, says Australia faced a seven-year eastern seaboard drought in the first decade of the 21st century while most of Western Europe was in drought in 2003. There the human...

Scientists call more controlled burns in West's forests
2013-10-03 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LA Times: Some of the West's leading fire scientists are calling for the increased use of managed burns to reduce fuel levels in the region's forests, warning that climate change is leaving them more vulnerable to large, high-severity wildfires. In a paper published Friday in the journal Science, seven fire and forest ecologists say the rate of fuel reduction and restoration treatments is far below what is needed to help sustain forest landscapes in an era of rising temperatures and increased drought. ...

Frackers are chewing up Pennsylvanias forests
2013-10-01 19:52:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Grist: Frackers dont just foul the air and the water they trample nature and carve up ecosystems into inadequate little pieces. Thats the message coming out of the U.S. Geological Survey, which studied aerial photographs of a handful of Pennsylvania counties where gas companies are using hydraulic fracturing to tap deposits in the Marcellus Shale. The surveys analysis revealed sweeping damage and forests fragmented by new well pads, roads, and pipelines. Jason Bell, a member of Marcellus Outreach...

West Pensylvannia forests being fragmented by gas drilling
2013-09-29 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Trib: A U.S. Geological Survey study of Butler and surrounding counties found thousands of acres of land and forest disturbance because of Marcellus shale and traditional gas well drilling. The USGS study examined aerial images from the National Agriculture Imagery Program taken between 2004 and 2010. In Butler County, 109 natural gas extraction sites resulted in more than 324 acres of disturbance, including about 13 miles of new roads, according to the most recently released study. The disturbance...
