(Telecompaper) KPN's Belgian subsidiary Base is abandoning its fixed broadband offer Snow. First launched in February 2013, the service will be ended by the middle of next year, as it has been unable to generate sufficient scale. The company used the Belgacom VDSL network to offer a triple-play package of TV, internet and fixed telephony. The around 35,000 customers will receive an offer to switch to Scarlet before the end of June 2015, when the services will stop. Scarlet offers a free switching service with a similar TV product. Customers with broadband or broadband and fixed telephony will receive the same service and prices. Business customers on the ProNet&Tel plan will also need to switch provider. The ten Base employees involved with the service will be moved to other positions at the operator. Base did not have a regulated access agreement with Belgacom, but struck its own commercial deal. The costs of the fixed product, such as content rights and connection costs, were too high for a challenger on the fixed market, and the government did not ensure a supportive environment for a newcomer, Base said. Base will focus on the mobile market going forward.

AT&T is no longer planning to compete with Gogo, Global Eagle and others in the in-flight connectivity industry. The nation's second largest wireless provider has offially grounded plans to build a new air-to-ground network that would have provided airline passengers with speedy in-flight Wi-Fi service.
