US invests to combat forced labour in garment supply chains

The US Department of Labor is investing US$22m to tackle the issue of abusive labour practices, including the use of child and forced labour in supply chains, with Bangladesh, Mauritius and Cambodia amongst the seven garment-producing countries earmarked for projects.

After ongoing concerns over the deteriorating labour and human rights situation in Cambodia prompted a number of brands and retailers to again call on the government to set out steps to bring the country in line with international standards, garment manufacturers now say such a narrative puts workers at risk.
