The 3rd Avenue shoe store near East 106th Street was bustling with customers around 11:30 a.m. when suddenly a bloody-faced man raced up to the cash register and told a worker he was attacked by four people, according to the Foot Locker employee. The victim held his hands over the gash that stretched from his ear to his chin, but remained calm, witnesses said.

The reception Portland's crowd gave the Dance Theatre of Harlem was epic, with ovations at every pause and a clamoring to applaud on their feet before each intermission in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Tuesday, the first of a two-night run. The youthful faces of the DTH dancers belie their many years of rigorous training, and I would have liked to see this group perform work as radical and genre-challenging for today's audience as Arthur Mitchell's first company performances were in the 1970s.
