Amazon launches virtual desktops as it assails private clouds as 'stopgap solutions'

Private clouds offer "none of the benefits" of a robust public cloud, and are only a stopgap solution perpetuated by "old-guard" IT companies such as IBM, said Andy Jassy, Amazon senior vice president who heads up Amazon Web Services. "If you're not planning on using the public cloud in some significant fashion, you will be at a significant competitive disadvantage," Jassy told a packed auditorium of nearly 9,000 IT pros Wednesday in Las Vegas, for the opening keynote of the AWS Reinvent conference.

AMD's Kaveri chips to reach laptops, desktops in January

Advanced Micro Devices aims to bring console-style graphics to PCs with its chips code-named Kaveri, which, after delays, will become available in desktops and laptops starting early next year. Kaveri will first reach desktops in January and will follow in laptops. The chips will also be used in servers and embedded systems, said Lisa Su, senior vice president and general manager of global business units at AMD, during a speech at the company's Developer Summit 2013 conference.

VMware is hoping to persuade more enterprises to make the leap to virtual desktops by improving graphics capabilities and allowing them to circumvent Microsoft's licensing terms. The company is this week hosting VMworld Europe in Barcelona and desktop virtualization is one of the big themes at the event. Along with its plan to take over the whole data center, including storage and networks, VMware has accelerated its desktop push. This week it acquired desktop-as-a-service company Desktone.
