Newly Detected Greenhouse Gas Is 7,000 Times More Potent Than CO2

2013-12-13 01:21:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

LiveScience: A greenhouse gas that is thought to have a potent impact on global warming was detected in trace amounts in the atmosphere for the first time, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Toronto discovered very small amounts of an industrial chemical, known as perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA), in the atmosphere. While only traces of PFTBA were measured, the chemical has a much higher potential to affect climate change on a molecule-by-molecule basis than carbon dioxide (CO2), the...

EPA's Proposal will Increase Greenhouse Gas Emissions

2013-12-10 06:00:00| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

EPA's 2014 proposed rule for the Renewable Fuel Standard, which would for the first time cut biofuel use, will require using more petroleum and increase emissions of greenhouse gases. BIO utilized GREET1.2013 model to estimate changes in petroleum demand and associated CO2 equivalent emissions from both 2013 and statutory RFS levels for 2014. According to estimates, EPA proposal will result in an increase of more than 23 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. New long-lived greenhouse gas discovered

2013-12-09 20:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: Scientists from U of T's Department of Chemistry have discovered a novel chemical lurking in the atmosphere that appears to be a long-lived greenhouse gas (LLGHG). The chemical -- perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA) -- is the most radiatively efficient chemical found to date, breaking all other chemical records for its potential to impact climate. Radiative efficiency describes how effectively a molecule can affect climate. This value is then multiplied by its atmospheric concentration to determine...

Rivers and streams release more greenhouse gas than all lakes

2013-12-09 20:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: Rivers and streams release carbon dioxide at a rate five times greater than the world's lakes and reservoirs combined, contrary to common belief. Research from the University of Waterloo was a key component of the international study, the findings of which appear in a recent issue of the journal Nature. "Identifying the sources and amounts of carbon dioxide released from continental water sources has been a gap in understanding the carbon cycle. Our findings show just how much carbon dioxide...
