EU's greenhouse gas emissions sink to lowest since 1990

2013-05-29 12:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: Greenhouse gases emitted by the European Union fell by 3.3 percent in 2011 to their lowest level since 1990, the European Environment Agency said on Wednesday. The 2011 decline, which coincided with a 1.6 percent rise in GDP, was the result of a relatively mild winter, the agency said. It followed a rise in 2010 when a colder winter and a rebound in many economies drove up energy use, breaking a multi-year pattern of emissions' declines. Jacqueline McGlade, the head of the European Environment...

Greenhouse Gas to Reach 3-Million-Year High

2013-05-03 20:34:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

LiveScience: The proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is set to break 400 parts per million this month, levels not seen in 3 million years, according to one of the best climate records available. The Keeling Curve, a daily record of atmospheric carbon dioxide, has been running continuously since March 1958, when a carbon dioxide monitor was installed at Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii. On its first day, the observatory measured a carbon dioxide concentration of 313 parts per million (ppm). That number...

Earth's greenhouse gas levels approach 400 ppm milestone

2013-05-02 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

LA Times: The ratio of carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere is flirting with 400 parts per million, a level last seen about 2.5 million to 5 million years ago, according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The Institution this week launched a daily Keeling curve update, showing the saw-toothed upward diagonal of rising carbon dioxide levels since the late 1950s. Isolated measurements have peaked at above 400 parts per million in the Arctic, but scientists are more alarmed at steady...
