IBM X series servers now pack Flash into speedy DIMM slots

The next generation of IBM's X-series servers will be able to accommodate solid-state Flash drives clipped into their DIMM memory slots, potentially improving the response times of fast-paced enterprise applications. On Thursday, IBM unveiled the Series 6 generation of its System X x86-based servers. In addition to the novel reuse of DIMM slots, the X6 architecture will also let customers upgrade them to a new generation of processors or memory without swapping in a new motherboard.

Facebook uses a seasoned Chef to keep servers simmering

When it comes to keeping its thousands of servers running smoothly, Facebook relies on the open source Chef configuration manager, modified slightly to handle the size of the social networking giant's huge infrastructure. "Chef's biggest advantage for us is its flexibility," said Phil Dibowitz, a Facebook systems engineer.

Intel eyes cloud servers with Broadwell server system-on-chip

There's been an uptick in the adoption of dense servers for cloud deployments and Intel hopes to capture a larger share of that market through server chips it will release next year. Intel hopes to embed Broadwell-DE high-performance server chips onto motherboards. Intel's first chips with a system-on-a-chip design, Broadwell-DE cannot be slotted, differentiating them from other standard server chips.
