U.S. Steel wins approval of Canadian unit restructuring

The restructuring of U.S. Steel Canada Inc. will go ahead, with its parent company providing $185-million in financing to support the Canadian unit through the end of next year. The steel maker, operating under the protection of the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, has won approval of the Ontario Superior Court to receive debtor-in-possession financing from United States Steel Corp. President Barack Obama speaks at Millennium Steel Service in Princeton, Ind., Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, to discuss the economy as part of Manufacturing Day.

Merck completes sale of consumer unit to Bayer

Drugmaker Merck said Wednesday that it completed the sale of its consumer care business, which makes products including Claritin allergy medication and Coppertone sun-care line, to German health care company Bayer for $14.2 billion. Bayer AG agreed to buy the business in May. Merck, of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, said it expects about $9 billion in proceeds after taxes.

Alcatel-Lucent sells enterprise networking unit to China Huaxin

Alcatel-Lucent has closed the sale of its IP telephony and ethernet switching equipment activities to China Huaxin. The spun off company will struggle to compete with the likes of Microsoft and Cisco Systems, and will have to make acquisitions of its own to grow.
