Technology that remotely makes a stolen smartphone useless could save American consumers up to $2.6 billion per year if it is implemented widely and leads to a reduction in theft of phones, according to a new report. Law enforcement officials and politicians are pressuring cellular carriers to make such technology standard on all phones shipped in the U.S. in response to the increasing number of smartphone thefts. They believe the so-called "kill switch" would reduce the number of thefts if stolen phones were routinely locked so they became useless.

(Telecompaper) BlackBerry has reported revenue of almost USD 976 million for the fourth quarter ending 01 March, down 18 percent or USD 217 million from around USD 1.2 billion in the previous quarter and down 64 percent or USD 2.7 billion from a year earlier. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was around 37 percent for hardware, 56 percent for services and 7 percent for software and other revenue. In Q4, BlackBerry generated hardware revenue on around 1.3 million smartphones, compared to around 1.9 million in Q3. Around 3.4 million BlackBerry smartphones were sold through to end customers in Q4, of which around 2.3 million were BlackBerry 7 devices. GAAP loss from continuing operations for Q4 was USD 423 million, compared to a loss of USD 4.4 billion in the previous quarter. Revenue from continuing operations for the year was USD 6.8 billion, down 38 percent from USD 11.1 billion in FY 2013. The GAAP net loss from continuing operations for fiscal 2014 was USD 5.9 billion, down from a net loss of USD 628 million a year earlier.
