Berkeley, Calif., a city known for its progressive politics, made history Tuesday night by approving the first real sin tax on soda in the United States. Voters looked likely to approve Measure D, a penny-per-ounce tax, by a wide margin after a bitter campaign battle with the beverage industry pouring in more than $2.1 million to oppose the initiative.

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday threw the full brunt of his anti-soda credentials -- and a slice of his financial might -- into the campaign for a Berkeley soda tax, announcing through a publicist that he will pitch an ad to run on television during the World Series. The TV ad shows AT&T Park packed to capacity, with a voice-over intoning that the number of obese and overweight Bay Area children could fill the stadium three times.
