Costco Wholesale Corporation, the nation’s second largest retailer, has agreed to cut emissions of ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas chemicals from refrigeration equipment at more than half of its stores nationwide. In settlement announced by U.S. EPA and DOJ, Costco will pay $335,000 in penalties for federal Clean Air Act violations and improve refrigerant management at 274 stores at an estimated cost of $2 million over the next 3 years. U.S. EPA and Department of Justice announced settlement with E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company at its Belle, West Virginia facility for 8 alleged releases of harmful levels of hazardous substances between May 2006 and Jan 2010. Several releases posed a significant risk to people or the Kanawha River, and one DuPont worker died after exposure to phosgene. DuPont will pay $1.275 million penalty and will take corrective actions to prevent future releases to resolve alleged violations.
