Melting Antarctic Ice May Trigger Unstoppable Sea-Level Rise

Nature World: Yet another melting ice formation in Antarctica may dump so much water into the ocean that it could trigger an unstoppable rise in sea level for thousands of years to come, a new study published in Nature Climate Change revealed. The current region threatening to raise our seas is the Wilkes Basin, the largest region of marine ice on rocky ground in East Antarctica. Currently, only a rim of ice at the coast holds the ice behind in place. "East Antarctica's Wilkes Basin is like a bottle on a...

East Antarctic Ice Basin May Be At Risk
2014-05-05 04:24:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Truthdig: Part of the East Antarctic ice sheet may be less stable than anyone had realised, researchers based in Germany have found. Writing in Nature Climate Change, two scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) say the melting of quite a small volume of ice on the East Antarctic shore could ultimately trigger a discharge of ice into the ocean which would result in unstoppable sea-level rise for thousands of years ahead. www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nclimate2226.html...

Winter Wont Let Go: Great Lakes Still on Ice
2014-05-01 20:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Central: April has come and gone but a record amount of ice still remains on the Great Lakes. This April was the lakes' iciest on record after a near-record winter, and the season has been notable for how early ice formed and how long it's lingered. At the close of April, nearly a quarter of the five Great Lakes -- the largest group of lakes on Earth -- still have ice on them and ice is likely to linger for weeks to come according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. That makes the month...
