SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. Our Earth Science Group has a vacancy for a Scientist with strong programming skills fm vacancy number 1535 Project Outline The satellite instrument SPEXone httpspace.oceansciences.orgspexone.htm is a multiangle polarimeter that will be part of the NASA Phytoplankton, Aerosol, Cloud ocean Ecosystem PACE mission, to be launched in 2022. The goal of SPEXone is to provide measurements of atmospheric aerosols in order to better understand climate change. SPEXone is being developed by a Dutch consortium consisting of SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research and Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands. Under SRONs scientific lead, the consortium is responsible for the design, manufacturing and testing of the instrument. Moreover, SRON develops the SPEXone data processor, which converts the raw instrument data into calibrated, geolocated measurements of radiance and degree of linear polarization level 1, and subsequently into aerosol and cloud data products level 2. Before launch, the processor will be tested on simulated data and will be applied to onground calibration measurements. After launch, in flight monitoring and calibration techniques will be used to test and improve the processor in order to achieve the best possible data products. To strengthen our development team, we are looking for a scientist with strong programming skills. The successful applicant will continue the development of the level 1 data processor for SPEXone. Stray light correction algorithm, geolocation modelling and data resampling are the first processor steps that need to be implemented. Interaction with the NASA PACE processing team is part of the job. Requirements For this interesting and challenging project, we are looking for a scientist with a PhD degree in physics or computational science with strong programming skills C and Python. Knowledge about spectrometer stray light, geolocation modelling and image resampling techniques, as well as experience in the field of atmospheric remote sensing and modelling spectrometer performance would be strong assets.
