Reduce air pollution for regions health, economy

2014-03-18 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Press Telegram: Clean air is a right, not a privilege. A childs health should not be determined by where they live or how much their parents make. But one-third of Californians still breathe levels of soot and smog that violate U.S. health standards, and cause asthma, cancer, heart attacks and strokes. These pollutants are also powerful short-term climate change forcers. This is a problem we cannot tolerate. But this problem is solvable with a clear long-term vision for climate policy that protects families and...

Climate change could reduce crop yields as soon as 2030

2014-03-18 13:21:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: Climate change will hit crop yields in temperate and tropical regions earlier than first thought, a new study has found. The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, warns that global warming of only 2C is likely to reduce yields of staple crops as early as the 2030s. Researchers from the University of Leeds analysed the results of 1,700 published studies of the impact that climate change will have on the yields of rice, maize and wheat. In 2007, a report from the Intergovernmental...

A new study adds strong support to a proposed rule that would require backup cameras on new cars and trucks. It shows the cameras are far more effective at spotting children and other obstacles than less sophisticated parking sensors or drivers using their mirrors. Backup cameras are already found on many of the latest cars, trucks and crossovers, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has repeatedly delayed announcing formal rules that would make them mandatory something Congress and President Bush authorized in 2007. Thats despite NHTSAs own estimate that the devices could save as many as 200 lives a year including a large number of children under the age of five inadvertently run over when motorists back up. Energy Collective: How much water do you use every day? The answer might surprise you. A paper released online last week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that Americans significantly underestimate their water use. Curious how my friends and family would fare, I reached out via social media and posed the simple question, how much water do you use each day? The results in my quick survey ranged to from 2 gallons to 300 gallons, but the most common estimate was 10 to 15 gallons...
