US apparel imports have been stronger in the third quarter of 2018, with Chinese shipments slightly recovering whereas Vietnam and Bangladesh have also benefited from the rebound of US demand. Duty-free access has been a key advantage for a series of countries in Central America, but also for Jordan and Egypt. Minimum Wages in Apparel Manufacturing Countries: Bangladesh vs other origins (Statistical Report)

Bangladesh has officially announced a 51% rise of its minimum wage at apparel plants, effective from December 1st. This sudden surge in its labor costs should however be rapidly digested by domestic exporters, thanks to higher productivity levels. In addition, minimum wages had not been raised for five years in Bangladesh, whereas being significantly increased in rival countries. Currency variations are also limiting the impact of higher wages in local currency terms. Our report displays minimum wages in low-cost apparel manufacturing countries in Asia, from January 2015 to last quarter 2018, in local currency and US$ terms. A 3-year comparison is available in local currency terms, fixed US$ terms, and current US$ terms.

EU Clothing Imports in 2nd Quarter and 1st Half 2018: Origins (Statistical Report)

Chinese shipments to EU's clothing market have dramatically fallen in the second quarter this year, whereas imports from Bangladesh were again surging and therefore taking the lead in volume terms. Unit prices have dropped in euro terms, however significantly rising in US$ terms which could limit the recovery of the European market in the coming months. Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia and Myanmar are three other winners, as reflected by our comprehensive review covering the second quarter and the first half 2018 per origin. A large number of statistical tables are released, with volume, value and unit value changes in both euro and US$ terms. The first half and second quarter tables are also available for download from 2013-2018.
