Google adds free VoIP calls to Hangouts, integrates Voice

(Telecompaper) Google has announced the integration of its Voice and Hangouts services in a redesigned Hangouts app for Android, iOS and the web. The new version of Hangouts (2.3) is rolling out over the next few days. Google said users simply need to install the accompanying dialler to turn on voice calls, which will be free to any number in the US and Canada, even if those receiving calls don't have Google Voice. International calls can also be placed, though rates will apply. As part of the redesign, Hangouts users will find their Google Voice transcripts and text messages included in their Hangouts listing.

Comedian Will Ferrell on Wednesday announced an effort to battle cancer by giving gamers a chance to participate in a two-hour gaming event with him. The Indiegogo initiative aims to raise $375,000 for nonprofit organizations Cancer for College and DonateGames, by asking gamers to contribute at least $10. One randomly selected giver will win the opportunity to play games with Ferrell on Oct. 26.
