Junior Computer Systems Engineer

Within the Generic Systems and Infrastructure Division GSI, the Junior Computer Systems Engineers will support maintenance and evolutions of operational software intensive services involving Wide Area Network, cloudcomputing and big data technologies. The initial focus will be on developing capabilities to reach full proficiency in the area of software and service engineering in a 247 operational environment. DUTIES Support maintenance and evolutions of operational services involving cloudcomputing and big data technologies, online data access and data distribution across WANs Wide Area Networks Design, prototype, develop and maintain small to medium size software applications in support to data access services and multimission elements of the EUMETSAT ground segment data dissemination, data archive, infrastructure and monitoring Conduct technical interactions with service providers and industrial partners Contribute to the generationmaintenance of technical baseline documentation, involving requirements engineering of the related services, interface specifications, design of functions and software applications Provide support to configuration and quality control activities. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Knowledge on software engineering Strong motivation to develop towards full professionalism in the area of computer engineering and big data and online data services, in an operational 247 environment Readiness to learn expand the own knowledge combined with excellent interpersonal skills and the proven ability to work in a team University degree in computer science, software engineering or other relevant discipline. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. For this role some of the following knowledge would be advantageous Objectoriented programming languages Unix Computer operating systems Computer and network architectures TCPIP Relational or noSQL databases. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The initial contract will be under the EUMETSAT Early Career Employee Programme ECEP, for two 2 years with grade A1 on the EUMETSAT salary scale. Subject to successful performance, a further contract of 5 years duration will be awarded in a post graded A2A4. Additional contracts may be awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of followup contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63, and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. This post is graded A1 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 4393 per month net of internal tax which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year. We are looking for a software engineer computer scientist with 4 or more yrs experience in software integration, validation, testing, requirements engineering to work as a ground segment systems engineer. Experience with very large data distribution and archiving, monitoring tools, definition and formalisation of interfaces among complex systems is highly valued. As we continue to develop our ground segment computer systems, we are looking for an engineer with a wide range of IT expertise to help evolve and maintain computer systems in our operational, highavailability environments. Your role at EUMETSAT Reporting to, and on occasion deputising for, the Computing Services Team Leader you will be responsible for the design, maintenance and evolution of our ground segment computer systems. You will provide engineering support and maintenance to the operational computer systems, help design architectural evolutions of computer system infrastructure, undertake upgrade activities and manage the procurements of operating systems OS and commercial offtheshelf COTS software and hardware. With proven experience in maintaining large scale computer systems in operational time critical environments you should have a qualification in computer science or equivalent to degree level. You should have a deep knowledge of Linux with a good command of UNIX and Windows operating systems. An associated knowledge of clustering, failover mechanisms, virtualisation and cloud computing is also mandatory. We would also expect you to have previously provided computer services following and embracing ITIL best practice. We expect you to have strong interpersonal and communication skills with excellent organisational and time management capabilities. You should be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. As part of our ongoing development, we are looking for a Computer Systems Architecture Engineer, based within the Computer and Storage Management team, to play a hands on role in the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of distributed hardware and system software platforms. This role will support the full lifecycle of EUMETSATs computer systems infrastructure. Your role will include designing architectural evolutions and managing upgrade activities of the computer systems infrastructure, either conducted inhouse or through commercial contracts. You will analyse, plan and manage the performance of hardware and software upgrades. Alongside this, you will ensure continuity of service to our Operations team in line with the established service level agreements. As one of our Systems Administrators you will liaise with external providers to manage hardware and software maintenance. Alongside a university degree in Computer Science or equivalent you will be able to demonstrate experience in maintaining large scale computer systems in operational, highavailability and time critical environments. You will be integral to bringing new ideas to support the team in the continued improvement and development of the computer system infrastructure.
