Post: "Whatever intentions have been declared by US and China is a beginning but it is not as ambitious as people wanted it to be," Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters in the national capital when he was asked to comment on the deal reached earlier this week. He termed it as a 'mutual consent' between US and China, the world's top carbon emitters. At the same time, he said, "I welcome that US has declared its intentions of cutting emissions with immediate effect." Noting that...

EU emissions target isn't as ambitious as it seems
2014-10-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New Scientist: It sounds bold and ambitious. European Union leaders last night signed off on an agreement to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 40 per cent by 2030. But climate scientists are wary of applauding the plan. For one thing, the target is a cut of 40 per cent compared with greenhouse gas emissions in 1990 - nearly 25 years ago. Since then, the EU has made cuts of almost 20 per cent, mainly through burning less coal and outsourcing heavy industries to developing countries. So it is virtually halfway there...

RTCC: UK climate chief Ed Davey has raised the stakes at negotiations over the EUs energy future energy plans, again insisting countries must consider 50% carbon emission cuts by 2030. European leaders are discussing a 40% emission reduction goal based on 1990 levels, but talks are in deadlock, with a six-country coalition led by Poland holding out for more cash in return for cuts. On Monday, an official in Brussels speaking for the eastern European states told RTCC that the plan could collapse...

Turning point for Peru's forests? Norway and Germany put muscle and money behind ambitious agreement
2014-09-24 22:56:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mongabay: From the Andes to the Amazon, Peru houses some of the world's most spectacular forests. Proud and culturally-diverse indigenous tribes inhabit the interiors of the Peruvian Amazon, including some that have chosen little contact with the outside world. And even as scientists have identified tens-of-thousands of species that make their homes from the leaf litter to the canopy, many thousands more remain undiscovered and nameless. Yet Peru's forests are facing a barrage of threats: unscrupulous oil...
