Fujitsu will stick with Unix to keep IBM in check, exec says

Doing battle in the $9 billion Unix server market is not for the timid. Designing a competitive microprocessor is a costly business, and with the Unix market seemingly in permanent decline it's easy to see why smaller players might drop out. But Fujitsu says it's in it for the long haul. Despite its small market share, the company is committed to developing its Sparc64 chip, and it thinks it has a role to play in keeping IBM from becoming too powerful, said Noriyuki Toyoki, Fujitsu corporate senior vice president and the head of its server division.

As a member of the Computer Systems Management team, the key person shall provide support to Ground Segment Commissioning and Routine Operations. The duties range from the support to the operation of the UNIXbased ground segment facilities, to the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of distributed hardware and system software platforms. This includes the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, the support to the procurement of hardware and software, and the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. The key person shall perform the following tasks installation and configuration of operating system and other software, tuning of operating systems parameters to optimize performance analysis, planning and performance of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between subsystems monitoring of the system performance, investigation into HW and system SW problems and performance of the relevant corrective actions ensuring that in case of HW or system SW failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of backup procedures liaison with the external providers of HW and system SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions administration of user accounts support to SW development and maintenance in relation to the utilization of system resources implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of technical documentation in relation to system upgrades provision of standbyoncall support provision of support, as required, to critical operations. As an essential part of the tasks above, the key person is expected to generate and maintain documentation. This may comprise writing and reviewing requirement and design specifications, change proposals, preparing documents supporting procurements, reviewing data packages belonging to technical inspections and reviews, writing and reviewing IT architecture and design, writing design evaluation reports, writingreviewing reports, test reports and overall status reports In the performance of the activities the key person shall apply the relevant change control and maintenance procedures. The tasks assigned to the key person will be agreed through dedicated workpackages with clear identification of activities and outputs expected. In the performance of these tasks, the key person shall apply the EUMETSAT configuration and change control procedures as well as the relevant system engineering standards, quality management procedures and maintenance procedures. PROFILE In addition to having a university degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the key person shall have extensive experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed systems. Proven knowledge and handson experience with the following is mandatory extensive experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed systems, expert knowledge and a significant work experience of the Solaris and Linux operating systems Redhat, SLES, good experience in the installation and administration of Oracle Databases, good IT system design skills good understanding of incident and problem management technical documentation skills Experience in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements. The key person shall be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with as many as possible of the following skills and system software environments TCPIP internetworking and the related network protocols and applications, e.g. NIS, NFS, DNS, SNMP, FTP high availability software like Sun Cluster, Veritas Cluster or any other administration and installation of Oracle Databases Experience in virtualization solutions, e.g. VMWare Experience in the installation, administration and troubleshooting on some of the following shall be considered as an advantage IBM computers running AIX RAID arrays EMC SAN Fabrics Brocade Backup and recovery systems Knowledge of Windows operating systems It is also an advantage if the key person can carry out basic hardware support like installing interface cards or physically setting up networks. The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills together with the ability to effectively cooperate within the team and with internal customers. The key person shall be able to conduct all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner, shall be able to work calmly and correctly under stress and must be able to work with a minimum of supervision. While the official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French, the working language for the position is English and therefore the Key Person must be able to work effectively in this language.

The Key person shall have an expert knowledge and a significant work experience of the UNIX operating systems, and should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with as many as possible of the following system software environments on IBM computers AIX, configuration of pseries servers, GPFS, TSM backup, NIM on DELL computers SuSE Linux andor RedHat Linux Virtualization based on VMWare products Network based on Ethernet EMC RAID arrays and virtual appliances SAN technology TCPIP internetworking and the related network protocols and applications, e.g. NIS, NFS, DNS, SNMP, FTP on Sun computers Solaris operating systems Experience in some of the following areas shall be considered as an advantage Installation and maintenance of ORACLE databases Maintenance of an Online Documentation system FirstSecond Level user support. Automatic Service Provisioning using Cloud technologies. It is also an advantage if the key person can carry out basic hardware support like installing interface cards or physically setting up networks. Because of the special support role good communications skills and stress resistance are essential for the job.
