BioMed Realty has landed two new life science tenants for its newly repositioned Sidney Research Campus at 200 Sidney St., 40 Erie St. and 21 Erie St. in Cambridge. The new tenants of the space, formerly inhabited by Vertex Pharmaceuticals , are CRISPR Therapeutics and Synlogic Inc. CRISPR, a biopharmaceutical company that's pioneering genome-editing technology to make medicines for serious diseases, will lease 19,817 square feet of lab and office.

Vertex wins big with approval of new cystic fibrosis drug

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a potential blockbuster drug by Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals to treat cystic fibrosis that is expected to make the company profitable within three years. The drug, called Orkambi, is a combination of the company's existing drug, Kalydeco, with a new drug which makes it usable by about four times as many patients with the disease.

Federal health officials have approved a new combination drug for the most common form of cystic fibrosis, the debilitating inherited disease that causes internal mucus buildup, lung infections and early death. The Food and Drug Administration cleared the twice-a-day pill from Vertex Pharmaceuticals for a variation of cystic fibrosis that affects about 8,500 people in the U.S. who are 12 years and older.

An official decision on whether to approve Orkambi is expected from the FDA by July 5 and the agency does not have to adhere to the panel's recommendation, but the vote of confidence has nonetheless raised the company's profile in trading today. The advisory committee unanimously declared that Orkambi is safe with one board member saying that, "The risks are small, or modest, and are all manageable with appropriate monitoring."
