IAG's a 1.36bn takeover offer for Aer Lingus has formally closed, with the British Airways owner having secured acceptances in respect of just over 98pc of shares in the former state-owned airline. IAG commenced its takeover battle for Aer Lingus last December.

Falling costs boost Q2 profits for IAG airlines group

International Airlines Group, which owns British Airways and Iberia, announced a rise in net profits in the second quarter on Friday thanks to falling costs and fuel bills. Operating profit rose by 40 percent to 530 million euros, driven by increases at British Airways and Iberia, although profits at Spanish low-cost airline Vueling fell.

News has erupted of another potential merger and acquisition in the Airline sector - the acquisition of Irish airline Aer Lingus by the International Airlines Group, IAG. IAG, the product of the merger in the early 2010s between ex-state-owned enterprises British Airways and Spain's Iberia, has become one of the world's global giants, ranked in the latest Forbes 2000 index of 2015 as the third largest airline in the world.
