Are you taking precautions for exhibiting at swine shows given the concerns about the spread of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus?
2013-08-02 23:42:11| National Hog Farmer
It's fair season again, with county fairs being held this summer and state exhibitions mostly running through the late sumer and fall. Are you taking precautions for exhibiting at swine shows given concerns about the spread of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus? We are making sure all transport vehicles get washed. We are planning to isolate all stock returning to the farm. We are not planning to bring back any stock from the fair. We are not exhibiting this year due to concerns over PED.

Aerosol Spread Linked to Large Sow Farm PRRS Breaks
2013-08-01 18:16:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: American Association of Swine Veterinarians A seven-year study of large North American sow farms conducted by the University of Minnesota has confirmed that the vast majority of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) outbreaks have been due to aerosol spread of the virus. PRRS virus aerosol transmission among herds is a major concern in pig-dense regions and filtration of incoming air, in combination with standard biosecurity procedures, has been demonstrated to prevent transmission of PRRS virus into susceptible herds. read more

Waves of Oil Spread to Another Bay on Popular Thai Resort Island After Pipeline Leak
2013-07-30 07:08:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: Workers in white suits used buckets to scoop up globs of crude oil blackening the once white sands and emerald waters of a tourist island in Thailands eastern sea on Tuesday, as the oil slick continued to spread three days after leaking from a nearby pipeline. Progress was being made on cleaning the oil that washed into Prao Bay on the west coast of Samet Island on Sunday night, though not fast enough, and rough seas and strong winds spread thin films of dispersed oil to a rocky bay farther north,...
Study Examines Role of Transport in Spread of PED Virus
2013-07-18 15:54:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: American Association of Swine Veterinarians A University of Illinois research study suggests that slaughter facilities and livestock collection points may serve as an effective means of spreading porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus. In his analysis, Jim Lowe, DVM, assessed the risk that collection points, such as packing plants, play in promoting the initial outbreak of a novel disease organism by estimating the rate of contamination of trailers with PED virus during the unloading process. read more

Dont Spread Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus When Applying Manure
2013-07-17 16:20:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Michigan State University The risk of spreading porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus through manure application should be a concern for all farms with pigs exhibiting clinical signs of the disease, according to a recent report by Gerald May and Beth Ferry, Michigan State University Extension. PED is spread through oral-fecal contact, manure-contaminated boots, clothing, transport trailers and other equipment. read more
