A physicist is gathering supporters for an ATLAS experiment Lego mini model that could put a piece of the Large Hadron Collider in the hands of Lego fans everywhere. [Read more]
IBM creates worlds smallest movie with a handful of precisely placed atoms
2013-05-01 13:14:43| Extremetech
IBM's bleeding-edge nanophysicists have created the world's smallest movie (embedded below), by moving single carbon atoms around a copper surface. The film, called A Boy and His Atom, is 60 seconds long and made of 242 individual stop-motion frames, with each frame being roughly 50 atoms wide. So you have some idea of this truly minute scale, a human hair is about 1,000,000 atoms wide. If IBM so wished, it could convert A Boy And His Atom into a feature film, and still fit the frames within the width of a human hair.

Don't Call It Vaporware: Scientists Use Cloud of Atoms as Optical Memory Device
2013-04-03 06:00:00| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Scientists at Joint Quantum Institute of NIST and University of Maryland demonstrated possibility of storing visual images within thin vapor of rubidium atoms, which may help in creating memory for quantum computers. Spatially addressable readout and erasure of an image in a gradient echo memory, which appeared in New Journal of Physics, builds on approach developed at Australian National University, where scientists showed rubidium vapor could be manipulated using magnetic fields and ...This story is related to the following:Trade Associations
