The death toll from earthquakes that struck southern Japan rose to 42 and the economic impact began to reverberate Monday as companies surveyed damage and the potential effects on production from supply-chain disruptions. The series of quakes that struck the island of Kyushu since Thursday evening are the nation's most devastating earthquakes since March 2011.

Toyota Motor Corp , the world's biggest-selling automaker, said on Sunday it would suspend much of its production at plants across Japan this week after earthquakes in the country's south led to a shortage of parts, while some other manufacturers extended stoppages due to damage to factories. The earthquakes on Thursday and Saturday, which killed at least 41 people, reflected the vulnerability of Japanese companies to supply chain disruptions caused by natural disasters, and also highlighted the "just in time" philosophy pioneered by Toyota and followed by many others.

Japan worked to return to normal on Friday, as nearly 44,500 people evacuated their homes and settled into temporary shelters after Thursday evening's quake, reported between 6.2 and 6.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, which is classified as "strong." " I'm sure we have to be ready for a prolonged evacuation , but I don't have a sense of reality about this," one Kyushu Island resident told The Japan Times.

Second deadly quake hits southern Japan, rescuers race against time

A powerful 7 point 3 magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan today, killing at least 16 people, injuring hundreds more and trapping people in collapsed buildings, barely a day after a quake killed nine people in the same region. Rescuers dug through the rubble of collapsed buildings and mud and debris today to try and reach those trapped, but continued aftershocks hindered rescue efforts and fuelled fears of more powerful quakes.
