(Telecompaper) Atmel, Broadcom, Dell, Intel, Samsung and Wind River have formed an industry to accelerate the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT). The Open Interconnection Consortium (OIC) will define connectivity requirements and ensure the interoperability among personal computing and emerging IoT devices. The OIC intends to deliver a specification, an open source implementation and a certification programme. Member companies will contribute software and engineering resources to the consortium. The specification will use existing and emerging wireless standards and be designed to be compatible with various operating systems. The first open source code will target specific requirements for smart home and office solutions, with automotive, healthcare and others to follow. Additional member companies including other leading appliance and device manufacturers, service and solution providers, chipset manufacturers and more are expected to join OIC in the coming months.
