Wesfarmers' resources business suffers first loss in 16 years

Wesfarmers chief executive Richard Goyder says it is unlikely the Perth-based conglomerate will offload its struggling resources division, which posted its first loss in 16 years on Wednesday. The resources division, which includes Curragh Coal in Queensland and the 40 per cent-owned Bengalla coal mine in NSW, was one of only two divisions to record a drop earnings in the six months to December 31, driven by currency hedge losses and lower export coal prices.

Bunnings star performer in Wesfarmers 1.2% profit boost

Net profit was A$1.4 billion in the six months ended Dec.31, compared to A$1.37 billion a year earlier, while the retail portfolio had a 9.2 percent boost in earnings before interest and tax to A$176 million following good Christmas season trading in all businesses, the company said. Revenue rose 4.7 percent to A$33.5 billion despite stiff competition in the supermarket sector from Woolworths and Aldi impacting Coles, its largest business.
