For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently seeking a Software and Systems Engineer to support EUMETSAT Advanced Retransmission Service EARS which provides polar satellite data from the EUMETSAT Metop and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA satellites. The geographical coverage of EARS is primarily over datasparse sea areas around Europe. EARS comprises six separate polar satellite instrument data services these are the existing EARSATOVS, EARSAVHRR, Pilot EARSASCAT and the EARSIASI services and the EARSNWC and EARSNPP services currently under preparation. Each of the EARS services retransmits observations from an instrument or an instrument group. Traditionally polar satellite data has been received via two methods Once per orbit data download from the spacecraft to a central ground station Direct transmission from the satellite to a High Resolution Picture Transmission HRPT station on ground Task Area Overview Responsible for software and system engineering tasks in this area are typically Analysis of the operational requirements for the EARS services Support to the definition and integration of the data handling and product processing systems for the new EARS services Technical liaison with the international partners providing the software packages for product processing of the satellite instrument data, including identification of test data and test environment Architectural and detailed design, implementation, testing and support of the EARS related software and applications Support the delivery of software externally developed, its installation, configuration and testing Support to the coordination and definition of technical interfaces with the external partners and service providers supporting EARS Support to the definition of EARS system evolution activities. Coordination of their implementation with relevant EUMETSAT teams and external partners Preparation of design documentation and other relevant documentation Verification and validation of software and systems, including the preparation of test plans, test procedures, test data and test tools Support to the configuration management of the EARS systems Support to the maintenance and evolution of the operational EARS system, in particular in response to the availability of new versions of the operational product processing packages and other key software packages Preparation, validation and maintenance of EARS maintenance and operational procedures and technical documentation Preparation and production of routine reports as necessary Support the coordination and announcement of system changes to the operational system with the relevant teams in Operations and Services to Users Department and the Technical and Scientific Support Department. When relevant raise, investigate and coordinate the resolution of anomalies with appropriate modifications or developments Provide support and guidance to the relevant teams in the Operations and Services to Users Department, in particular regarding system operations and product processing aspects When relevant, provide User Service with information required by Users about services, including documentation and replies to User queries. Qualifications and Requirements Applicants require a University degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline, together with having experience of software development, operation or maintenance in realtime systems, objectoriented design methodology and are very familiar with software development standards. Essential Significant work experience in the Linux and UNIX SVR4 SUN Solaris, IBM AIX Operating System environments, and be familiar with the performance of the above tasks, with networking, distributed applications, TCPIP services and Web services. Mandatory At least 3 years of experience with design, development and integration of operational ground systems providing 24 x 7 services In depth knowledge of and experience with the Java programming language In depth knowledge of Linux operating system scripting languages, preferable PERL, KSHCSH and bash In depth knowledge of XML In depth knowledge of the development and maintenance of web interfaces and services using Tomcat and Apache in a UNIX environment Source Code control system, preferably SubVersion Configuration Control Formalised Software Testing System verification and validation The ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and obtain a system overview Desirable Working knowledge and experience in the following areas CC experience in a UNIX environment Java Message Service based software developments Web based wide area data distribution Software deployment and maintenance for systems with a geographical diversity The provision of realtime data services Scheduling systems Writing of formal technical documentation Processing of satellite sounder, imager or scatterometer observations Familiarity with the data formats used for Direct Readout by the NOAA and EUMETSAT polar orbiting satellites Communication networks Experience with interface design You shall have good communications skills, to allow the effective communication of information under a variety of circumstances and be used to working proactively within a small team, being able to work with the minimum of supervision. The variety of the tasks and the scope and complexity of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. You must have the ability to perform under very high workloads and adapt to a rapidly changing environment is essential, conducting all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner and working calmly and correctly under stress. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French, the working language for the position is English, you must be able to work effectively in this language, and French is an asset. WORKING HOURS There are two types of support possibilities Normal support Monday to Friday 0830 1700 Standby callout support EUMETSAT will specify in advance, requests for standby support must be authorized by the EUMETSAT technical representative. During periods of standby support, you shall respond to calls by telephone or beeper outside normal working hours, and shall provide remote support to Operations. You may, by telephone, ascertain the nature of the problem but must be available, if required, to report to the Mission Control Centre within one hour of callout. In such a case the callout support will essentially aim at restoring the mission.
