Outgoing Telstra chief executive David Thodey says the company is prepared for a potential exit of some senior staff in the wake of chief financial officer Andy Penn being picked as his replacement. Fairfax Media can also reveal that Telstra's head of strategic finance and former Barclays' Australia chief executive Cynthia Whelan is seen by insiders as the frontrunner to replace Mr Penn in the CFO role.

Telstra promotes CFO Andrew Penn to CEO, Thodey retires

(Telecompaper) Australian operator Telstra has appointed Andrew Penn as its CEO, effective 1 May. Penn replaces David Thodey, who has decided to retire after almost six years as CEO. Penn currently serves as Telstra's CFO and Group Executive International. He is a former CEO of insurance company Axa Asia Pacific, and has more than 30 years' experience in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and across Asia-Pacific in chief executive, finance, strategy and other executive positions. Thodey will continue to assist with Penn's transition from 1 May until the end of the financial year (30 June) and remain "available to the business" until late August, Telstra said.

Telstra boss David Thodey is stepping down after six years in the job, to be replaced by the company's finance chief Andrew Penn. Mr Thodey, 60, has been chief executive of the telecommunications giant since 2009 and has been widely credited with turning the business around after the turbulent reign of his predecessor Sol Trujilo.
